Outcomes
The curriculum is designed to achieve the following learning outcomes, in addition to the graduate learning outcomes shared across all of USD’s Master’s level programs. The Master of Science in Cyber Security Engineering program provides knowledge and skill in architecting, developing, and fielding secure network solutions against cybersecurity threats. Throughout their studies, students will:
- Apply the foundational concepts of cybersecurity and engineering principles to architect, build, and field secure systems.
- Analyze a system to determine the security objectives, policies, and threats, and select appropriate and cost-effective controls to mitigate risk.
- Perform system security assessments by applying skills in security testing, forensics, incident response, and continuity planning in order to identify potential weaknesses and solutions.
- Demonstrate proficiency in the use of a scripting language to write simple scripts to automate system administration tasks.
- Recognize professional responsibilities and make informed judgements in cybersecurity practice based on legal and ethical principles.

Students are admitted throughout the year for admission into one of three semesters (Spring, Summer, and Fall). Each semester two courses are offered, with students focusing intensively on one course at a time – a total of 7 weeks for each course. An academic calendar for the first year follows.

About
Dr. Ebrahim Tarshizi is a Professor of Practice and Academic Director of the Applied Data Science (MS-ADS) & Applied Artificial Intelligence (MS-AAI) programs at the University of San Diego’s Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering, and he serves on the scientific advisory board for a tech start-up company in San Diego, CA. He is an Adjunct Professor of Data Science and Business Analytics at National University, where he has taught a variety of analytics courses. He is also an instructor for the UCSD Extension’s Business Intelligence Analysis.
Ebrahim is a former senior technical advisor for the CDC National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) Mining Research Program. He was a visiting scholar at the UCSD’s San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) and an Assistant Professor at Michigan Tech, where he spent over two years to co-develop a new engineering curriculum.
Ebrahim received a Ph.D. degree in Geo-Engineering from the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR). He obtained an M.Sc. in Data Science from Michigan Tech and an M.B.A. from UNR College of Business. He earned a B.Sc. in Exploration Engineering in Iran. Ebrahim has published several articles in international journals and symposium proceedings and has delivered many technical reports and presentations at professional meetings and conferences. He has received a number of University, national, and international awards and honors.
